MC, writer, host, actor, director and more
Akwasi (born March 6, 1988) is a successful Dutch artist, songwriter, actor, and director (with Ghanaian roots) mostly known as the frontman of the Dutch hip-hop formation Zwart Licht.
A week after he started at the Theatre Academy in Maastricht in 2008, TopNotch/Universal offered him, Leeroy and producer Hayzee a record deal where they have released three albums ever since. With his animated rap style and compelling presence on stage is Akwasi the undisputed frontman of the group.
Akwasi graduated in 2012 as Theatrical Performer at Maastricht’s Theatre Academy. In addition to his training at the Theatre Academy, he also joined theatergroup Likeminds in 2006. He did an internship at the internationally acclaimed Afrikaaps and he also appeared in the British theater adaptation of La Haine: Hate. He played in several roles as De Vluchtkerk (Duivelse Dilemma’s), Feuten and Toren C. He has been featured as a presenter in a Dutch Documentary "Slavernij Voorbij" (NTR) and he also played the lead role in the short film Zorn (directed by Carina Molier) and Always Hardcore (48 Hour Film Project, Utrecht). The past 5 years Akwasi has also been the jury and coach of several music competitions as De Grote Prijs van Nederland, Wanted, Art Rocks and Kunstbende.
After he successfully graduated, he could again put the focus entirely on his music career and started a new project: "Daar Ergens”. Akwasi refuted in 2012 the focus between music and theater to start an interdisciplinary project "Daar Ergens" in which he worked together with his band on songs from the works of Bram Vermeulen. They have played the highly successful and always sold out theatrical music show for two years at Oerol (Terschelling).
Akwasi’s debut album “Daar Ergens" was released on his brand new recordlabel Neerlands Dope, an independent label that was founded in 2013. Name of the record is a modern degeneration of Neerlands Hoop, the former cabaret group of Freek de Jonge and Bram Vermeulen. Neerlands Dope will first release music by Akwasi and will then focus on new acts. The album's release was accompanied by performances in various music venues and theaters where he brought theater and hip hop together.
